Summer Reading Program Begins June 16th

Catch the Reading Bug this summer by taking part in summer reading program. Kids who read at least 10 books get a goodie bag full of fun treats, plus book bucks, donated by the Friends of the Lopez Island Library, that can be redeemed at Islehaven Bookstore. The program runs from June 16 to Aug 11. Young ones can take part even if the books are being read to them or by listening to audio books. Remember, books about bugs are a great read, you can read anything you like to earn book bucks!

Library Open House

The Library will host an Open House on June 8th at 2 - 4pm with refreshments and demos of the new online services available to island library patrons from home. From how to fix your old Chevy to articles on quilting with silk, our databases have a wealth of information you can access from home with your library card number. Our recent survey told us a lot about what Lopez Island library users want from the library: subject areas to improve upon, magazines to buy, programs to present, and more.

Survey Results & Drawing Winners

We also learned patrons prefer to see movies on Saturday at the library, so we'll be having a matinee every Sat at 2pm. Check our calendar to see what is showing on Saturdays. Those who completed the library survey were entered into a drawing for prizes. Winners picked were Iris Graville, Sue Cook, and Pete Petersen. Enjoy your gift cards and thanks for the feedback.

Best-selling Author Coming June 28

Mark your calendars for June 28th when the library will host a reading and visit from best-selling young adult author Deb Caletti. Deb Caletti is an award-winning author and a National Book Award finalist whose books are published and translated worldwide. Her first novel was The Queen of Everything (Simon & Schuster, 2002), of which a starred review in Publisher's Weekly proclaimed: "This marks Caletti as a writer to watch." Although written for adults, its coming-of-age themes gained it acclaim as a Y/A book. It made the cover of the esteemed review journal The Bulletin for the Center of Children's Books (the first trade book to do so in the journal's history), and then was chosen for PSLA's Top Forty of 2003 and the International Reading Association's Young Adult Choices for 2004. It is currently in its thirteenth printing. Please join us on Saturday, June 28th at 11am in the Library Community Room for a chance to see and visit with this amazing Northwest Author. The library will be working with Phyllis Potter to make the books available for purchase through the bookstore.

New additions for Young Readers

The library has recently added numerous titles for children under the age of four. You will find books by such popular authors as Lois Ehlert, Leslie Patricelli, and Tana Hoban. Books for very young children should be short, contain rhymes, and reflect the people and activities in their immediate environment. Look for displays in the children's library for more information on specific titles that are developmentally appropriate for your child or ask one of the librarians.
