Deb Caletti to Read at Lopez Library

Summer is coming - really it IS coming - but you can't spend ALL your time outdoors so don't forget your library. Hammocks are an ideal place for lounging with a good book or audio book for that matter. In an effort to lure you into our door, we've arranged two great author readings for you in June and July. June 28th at 11am, best-selling Northwest author Deb Caletti, whose book The Queen of Everything is set in the San Juan Islands, will read and discuss the craft in the Library Conference Room. Light refreshments will be served.

Local Writers Read at Lopez Library

In collaboration with the Lopez Writer's Guild, the library is hosting a reading of local writers from this long-standing group. John Sangster, Alie Smaalders, Colleen Armstrong, and Molly Swan-Sheeran will be doing readings at 7:30, July 10th around the Fireplace in the Library. John has published both personal essays and poems in a broad array of literary magazines, on-line literary magazines, anthologies, and newspapers. His writing awards include being a Fishtrap Fellow (Fishtrap is a writer's workshop/conference that takes place every summer in Oregon's Wallowa Mountains) and a Jack Straw Writer.

John says, "I write to find out what's inside. The trigger can be anything - an observation, something I overhear, a question that comes to mind. When it works, I'm sometimes startled by what appears on the monitor or the notebook's blue line - a moment of receptivity. I'm drawn to the prose poem because it seems to provide me with the freedom and spontaneity that can lead to those moments. I like the look of a prose poem - a box of words - and I like working with a form that's controversial, some claiming it's not a form."
