Lopez Library - July 2008

Free Compassionate Communication Class At The Library

Join us at the library on July 26, 6-9 p.m. and July 27 from 10-2 for a 7 hour introduction to Commpassion Communication, taught by John Cunningham. Mr. Cunningham trained in Switzerland with Marshall Rosenberg, the founder of Nonviolent Communication. A Waldorf teacher, Mr. Cunningham teaches compassionate communication to individuals, communities and educators around the world. Over the years, John's Lopez workshops have touched many in our island community. This will be his only workshop in the Northwest this summer. The workshop will help you understand others as they want to be understood and better understand yourself. To register, contact Nikola Chopra at 468-4512 or Kate Clayton at 468-2368. Through simple non-threatening group exercises, you'll learn to create connections that enable everyone to get their needs met. Free Childcare is available. Contact Nikola if interested.

July 4th Book Sale a success - Thank you!

Summer started off with a bang at the Four of the July Friends of the Library book sale. Many thanks to all the volunteers and book buyers who helped make this a great success. The Friends took in over $6,452.00 in one day. Your donations of books and other materials gives us the variety of stock to make this an exciting experience for locals and island visitors alike. Thank you, dear Lopezians, for your continued support of the library!

New at the Library - Kindle - a wireless reading device

An image of a Kindle wireless book reader

At the request of the Lopez Island Hospice and Home Support organization, the library has purchased Amazon's Kindle, an electronic book reader and Downloaded a number of brand new titles onto it for patrons to try. This reader is available for checkout. This a great option for readers who can't hold and turn the pages of a traditional book. At only 10 ounces, Kindle can hold up to 200 books, plus newspapers. The library chooses which titles to download for a reasonable cost of $9.99 or less for most books. A couple of patrons have bought their own for the ease of downloading new books instantly (through cell phone signals)and having just one light weight item that allows them access to hundreds of books at once. If interested, call us to reserve the Kindle for a future look. Laptops with wireless internet are also now available for checkout for use in the library.

Teddy Bear Picnic - August 20th - Charley Thweatt to Perform

Epson Perfection V700 Photo scanner

The 28th annual Teddy Bear Picnic will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 20th. There will be snacks and entertainment, bring your bear (or other stuffed friend) and a sun hat! Charley Thweatt, songster and guitar man extraordinaire, will regale us with silly songs and maybe we can lure Mr. Bear out of his cave in the library basement to come out and parade with us too.

Grant awarded for children's books

Certified therapy dogsThe Libri Foundation has awarded the Lopez Island Library a $1,000 book grant through the BOOKS FOR CHILDREN program. The Foundation supports the concept that children who learn to enjoy reading at an early age continue to read throughout their lives. In order to develop a love of reading, children must have access to books which stretch their imaginations, touch their emotions, and expand their horizons. Look for these new children's books to arrive in the next month. Happy reading!
