Parking & Pedestrians
The good news about the library is people love it so much they are coming here in droves. This summer we've had numerous days with over 500 patrons coming to visit in a single day. The bad news is that the parking lot is often full! But wait there is more good news: the Lopez Island Community Church is now the designated overflow parking area for the library, Monday through Saturday. Just park at the back of the lot and walk through the newly widened hedge opening and up the steps past the fire station.
The Fisherman Bay crosswalk and pedestrian pathway should be finished by the end of September.
Picnic
The 29th annual Teddy Bear Picnic will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 22nd. There will be snacks and entertainment, bring your bear (or other stuffed friend) and a sun hat! Hans Meyer will be playing his ear-tickling, child oriented music that stimulates imaginations while building self-esteem. He has an irresistible sense of humor which appeals to people of all ages and are immediately attracted to his playful, fun-loving personality and his magical, memorable songs.
Of course, we'll coax Mr. Bear out of his cave in the library basement to come out and parade with us too. Tip of the hat to Helen Anderson who started this beloved Lopezian tradition almost 30 years ago.
PoetryLopezian poet Molly Swan-Sheeran will be at the library in August to introduce her new poetry chap books, which are small booklets of about 10 poems each. This reception and book signing will be at the library conference room on Wednesday the 26th of August at 7 PM.
She will be reading selections from her books. These 'chap books' are small booklets of about 10 poems each. Molly has been writing poetry since 1965, and has been reading her poetry to acclaim for years.
Her first book, Saturday Morning, is poems inspired by love, including the passionate "To Chocolate". Her second book is Double Rainbow, poems inspired by nature on Lopez Island. Her third book, Since the Moment, is poems of spirit, and the forth, Harpo Marx Angels, is of amusing poems. Local poet John Sangster will be introducing her and will also read a few of his poems. John has published a book of poems entitled Island Year. Refreshments will be served, some of them bound to be chocolate.
