Issued library cards have a wallet-sized card plus a convenient mini-card which can clipped to your keychain.

Borrowing Materials

Library Card Applications

You will need a current library card to borrow materials from the Lopez Island Library, reserve items from our library, or to borrow from the Inter-Library Loan system. Applications are available at the circulation desk, and you will be able to borrow materials on the same day you apply for your card.

Who Qualifies for Free Library Card?

You can get a free library card if you are a resident, rent or own property on Lopez Island or if you attend school on Lopez Island. Applicants under 17 must have applications co-signed by a parent or guardian, who is willing to take financial responsibility.

Proof of residency is required. If you are not listed as owner of a property in the San Juan County Assessor's database, then a utility bill in your name or driver's license can be used to confirm you are a Lopez Island resident.

Additional Options

If you don't qualify for the free card, the following options are available:

  • Visitor cards are perfect if you are visiting for a few months or less. Cards are $10.00, good for two months and allow you to borrow up to three (3) items at any one time.

  • Non-resident cards are for people who visit the island frequently throughout the year. Non-resident cards are $50, have no borrowing restrictions, and are good for one year (from the date of purchase).

Replacement and Renewal of Library Cards

You should bring your library card whenever you visit the library. If your card is lost or stolen, please report it to a library staff member immediately. A block will be placed against your file so that no one else can use your card. If your card is lost, replacement of the card is $3.00.

Borrowing Collection

The library offers over 30,000 circulating items for your education and enjoyment, including fiction and non-fiction titles, audio books, films on DVD and video andmusic CD titles. We also have two Kindle book readers and various musical equipment to loan out, including violins, guitars, and keyboards. The is in addition to what is offered in the Juvenile and Young Adult section of the library. We also offer a computer projector, overhead projectors, big screens, and a VCR player for checkout. Consult with library staff about requesting these items.

Borrowing Limits

Books, Periodicals, Music

Books, audio books, magazines, musical instruments and music CDs are due in 28 days. There are no borrowing limits, unless you have items overdue. You can renew these items as often as you wish, providing another patron has not placed a hold on your item.

Films

All films, whether fiction or non-fiction, are due in seven days with a max. of four (4) films checked out to any one individual at a time. You may also renew these items up to three (3) times, as long as no one is waiting.

Computers in the Library

The library has ten public computer terminals and three laptops for use in the library only. Each computer is loaded with 3 different internet browsers, the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher (desk top publisher), and Access (power database manager). Also in the mix are the Encarta Premium Encyclopedia and the Kids Encyclopedia, Encarta Dictionary, Windows Movie Maker, Windows Media Player, Roxio Creator, Real, QuickTime, iTunes, Picasa (photo editor), Gimp (photo editor, and beginners and intermediate Learn to Play Bridge programs. Two of the computers have the Rosetta Stone lanuage program installed. The library also has two printers, one of which is also a scanner.

Patrons and visitors may also bring in their own laptops to use with the wireless router we make available to everyone.

The library offers free access to the Internet as part of its mission to provide access to information and resources. In order to make Internet resources available to as many users as possible and to ensure that this resource is used in a manner consistent with library policies, computer and internet users must agee to the terms as set forth in the Lopez Library Internet and Wireless Policies (Sections 3.2 and 3.3). Violations of this policy may result in loss of computer privileges.

Computer users can use their library card number and pin to login for computer time. Visitors also have access by asking the circulation desk for a temporary pass.
